CPO certification: what it is and how to get it
Outside facts checked 22 October 2026
What it is
PHTA says CPO certification has given people the knowledge and skills for proper pool operation for over 50 years. The course is taught by certified instructors from PHTA's Pool & Spa Operator Handbook. It covers both commercial and residential pools.
What the course teaches, in PHTA's headings:
- Preventing drowning, recreational water illness, suction entrapment, evisceration, diving accidents, electrocution, chemical hazards, and slips and falls
- Regulatory guidelines
- Disinfection and water balance
- Troubleshooting, chemical testing and record keeping
- Chemical feed
- Automation and technology
PHTA says the course follows current guidance from the CDC, the Council for the Model Aquatic Health Code and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. It lists approvals from IACET, the Florida CILB, the California Department of Public Health and the Environmental Health Association.
Who needs it
PHTA's CPO page does not say who must hold it. Before you take on an HOA, apartment, hotel or gym pool, ask the local health department what operator certification it wants on file.
On a residential route, CPO is a credential you can show customers on your website and your quotes, and a structured grounding in water balance for a new tech.
If you plan to join IPSSA, its membership rules ask you to pass IPSSA's Water Chemistry Exam or an approved certification program. Ask your chapter whether CPO counts. See IPSSA and PHTA.
Course formats
| Format | How it runs | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom | Two days in person with a certified instructor | 16 hours |
| Blended | PHTA's online CPO Fusion course, then a one-day in-person class | 16 hours in total |
| Virtual | A live class on Zoom or a similar platform, on set days, where approved | Set by the class |
How to get it
- Find a class with PHTA's course finder. You can filter by country, state, city, dates, format and instructor, and by whether Spanish materials are available.
- Complete the CPO course in one of the formats above.
- Pass the CPO exam.
PHTA lists no industry experience as a prerequisite. Classes are run by individual instructors, and PHTA's course finder does not publish prices, so the cost comes from the class you pick.
Renewing it
The certification is valid for 5 years. The course finder lists one-day CPO recertification classes in English, Spanish and French, and PHTA's CPO page links to its recertification details.
Getting more from it on the route
The course teaches the theory. The habit that makes it pay off is testing and logging the same readings at every stop, so you can see a pool drift before it turns. The pool library covers each reading in the order a tech works down the water test, starting with free chlorine and the LSI.
